Stamp and heat emboss your image, then scribble watercolor crayons over it, putting color where you want. Now dip your fingertips into some water and drum your fingers (just the tips!) up and down over each color. Wipe them off before doing another color so it doesn't "muddy" on you.
You control the outcome by laying on color as heavy as you want and water as lightly as you want. Of course this works best on watercolor paper, but can be done on regular cardstock if you weight it down when dry so it flattens out.
